This book explores the contribution of pesantren to socio-cultural transformation, particularly in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Pesantren has been a subject of extensive studies among Indonesian and foreign scholars and researchers since 1980s. Most of these studies, however, only investigate major pesantren in Java and Sumatera, and to some extent also in Lombok and Kalimantan. Only few studies have focused on pesantrens in Sulawesi or in eastern Indonesia more generally.
This book observes various social, cultural and religious transformation in Indonesia as part of pesantren’s instrumental roles through its typical education and dakwah programs. Through an anthropological investigation and with a theological perspective, the book focuses on the role of Pesantren As’adiyah in Sengkang, Wajo, in the transmission of Islamic religious knowledge, the maintenance of Islamic traditions, and the provision of training centers for social reproduction of Muslim scholars.
This book contributes to give a better understanding of the current issues pertaining to pesantren and pesantren traditions in Indonesia. Many people still firmly believe and hope that pesantren will continue to play a crucial role in transmitting and preserving Islamic universal and perennial values to the next Indonesia Muslim generation. Only few, however, is conscious about enormous challenges that the pesantren is facing today. This book tries to regenerate such a consciousness.
