Reading Life Between the Lines is a poetry course book designed for intermediate to advanced learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) who seek to develop both a solid understanding of English poetry and the analytical skills needed to appreciate it. Developed in alignment with the Poetry course syllabus for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students at the university level, this book serves as a comprehensive guide to the study of poetry in English literature.
Beginning with the nature, functions, and historical development of English poetry, the book gradually introduces readers to the essential intrinsic and extrinsic elements of poetry. It provides systematic discussions of major poetic devices—including imagery, simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, metonymy, synecdoche, allegory, symbol, paradox, overstatement, understatement, irony, and allusion—before exploring meaning, rhythm, meter, poetic structure, and the creative process of writing poetry.
Each chapter combines clear conceptual explanations with carefully selected poems that illustrate the featured concepts, followed by analytical activities designed to strengthen students’ critical reading and interpretation skills. The selected poems are intentionally chosen at an intermediate level of difficulty to help EFL learners become familiar with figurative language while building confidence in reading and analyzing English poetry.
