In learning English, there are several terminologies related to the status of English as an international language, English as an International Language (EIL). There are several names for English according to its status in the world, such as English as a first language (native language), a second language (second language), and a foreign language (foreign language). As an international language, there are three terms in the use of English in the world, namely inner-circle, outer-circle, and expanding-circle. Inner-circle is a term that refers to the status of English which is used as a first language, outer-circle refers to the status of English which is used as a second language, and expanding-circle is the term for using English as a foreign language, as happened in Indonesia.
English as a foreign language has been included in the education curriculum in Indonesia since Indonesia achieved independence. This government policy is quite unfounded, namely as an effort to improve the quality of Indonesia’s human resources.
