This book arises from a Research and Development (R&D) project that identifies and addresses a critical gap in the field of language education—the absence of a language assessment textbook specifically designed for the Indonesian higher education context. Although handbooks offer comprehensive theoretical discussions on assessment, they frequently lack contextual adaptation to Indonesian pedagogical and institutional settings. To fill this void, the present volume, Language Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, provides a contextually relevant reference that systematically integrates assessment examples aligned with the national curriculum from elementary to tertiary levels.
The book’s theoretical framework begins by clarifying fundamental assessment concepts, including test, assessment, measurement, evaluation, and teaching. Building upon this conceptual basis, it elaborates on the design of valid, practical, authentic, and high-washback assessments. In addition, it examines assessment practices across cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains and introduces the incorporation of technology-based assessment in response to contemporary educational demands. Theoretical discussions are consistently grounded in Indonesia’s curricular requirements, ensuring both conceptual depth and practical relevance.
The distinguishing feature of this volume lies in its extensive collection of contextualized assessment models. These examples illustrate effective strategies for evaluating core language skills—reading, listening, speaking, and writing—along with vocabulary and grammar, across different educational levels in Indonesia. By addressing the gap identified in the R&D findings, the book provides a comprehensive framework that bridges theory and practice.
